
Mountain
View, CA - J. Luigi Borrillo, MD, is being recognized as a Distinguished
Ophthalmologist for his work in the medical field and in
acknowledgment of his work at Northern California Retina Vitreous
Associates.
Dr.
Borrillo attained his undergraduate and medical degrees at Northwestern
University. As an undergraduate student, he published his first paper in the
Journal of the American Chemical Society, and graduated with Honors in
Chemistry. In medical school, he worked with Dr. E. Lee Stock on Surgical Wound
Healing of the Cornea. He was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor
Medical Society (AOA).
He then
went on to a residency in ophthalmology at the Eye Institute in Milwaukee, WI.
After earning the distinction of Chief Resident, he also traveled to the
Philippines, where he shared surgical techniques with Filipino Ophthalmology
residents in underserved rural areas.
After
that, Dr. Borrillo did his Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at the esteemed
Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. There he studied under the guidance of
numerous leaders in the field of Retinal Disease and Vitreoretinal
Surgery.
Dr.
Borrillo is board-certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of
Ophthalmology (ABO).
In his
daily routine, Dr. Borrillo specializes in all forms of vitreoretinal diseases.
He is a partner at Northern California Retina Vitreous Associates (NCRVA).
Founded in 1983, NCRVA is one of California’s largest and most prominent
vitreoretinal practices.
Dr.
Borrillo sees patients across multiple locations, including West San Jose,
Mountain View, San Mateo, and Daly City.
Dr.
Borrillo provides patients with exceptional care for retina, macula, and
vitreous diseases. He performs surgeries for complicated retinal detachments,
diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, and cataract surgery
complications.
Outside
of NCRVA, Dr. Borrillo also volunteers at the UCSF-VA Medical Center in San
Francisco, CA. There he helps oversee residents in their retina clinic,
providing care for veterans.
He has
penned journal articles and book chapters in the ophthalmic literature.
Furthermore, he has presented his research findings at national conferences and
meetings. His clinical interests include retinal detachments, macular holes,
vein occlusions, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and
retinopathy of prematurity.
He has
recently been honored with a profile feature by SpinDigit and IssueWire (2021),
the Patients’ Choice Award (2017), and the On-Time Doctor Award (2016, 2017).
Alongside
his clinical duties, he has several fun hobbies. Dr. Borrillo recently authored
and published the graphic novel “No Ghosts in Hiroshima” (Scout Comics 2021).
He also
enjoys reading, playing judo, Olympic weightlifting, and snowboarding. He is
fluent in English and Tagalog.
