BENEDICT L. FERNANDO, MD - INTERNIST

West Haven, CT — Benedict L. Fernando, MD, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Distinguished Medical Professional in the medical field for his work as an Internist with PACT Primary Care.

Dr. Fernando attended medical school at the University of Ceylon in Sri Lanka and completed his internship at the General Hospital Ceylon. He finished his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in allergy and infectious disease at the Hospital of Saint Raphael when he relocated to the United States.

Dr. Fernando has worked in the medical field for more than 50 years. He is affiliated with PACT Primary Care in West Haven, CT and can also be found on staff at Milford Hospital Yale-New Haven Hospital’s York Street campus and Yale-New Haven Saint Raphael campus. He started his private practice 45 years ago.  While at Saint Raphael, the doctor served as an emergency room attending physician member of the medical board, president of medical staff and trustee before joining PACT Primary Care.

Dr. Fernando is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). According to Dr. Fernando, the ABIM is a physician-led non-profit independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. He notes that internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

Dr. Fernando’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all doctors, and now his daughter is also a doctor. He has never had any malpractice suits against him. The doctor’s patients stay with him for years and years, only leaving if they move out of the area.  He prides himself on always being honest with patients and never rushing them. He knows how important it is to really listen to the patients. He currently has 16 physicians and 6 offices in Connecticut and one of his partners took over management of the practice 15 years ago.

In his spare time, Dr. Fernando enjoys spending time with his eight grandchildren and gardening.
