
West Haven, CT — Benedict L. Fernando, MD, is being
recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Distinguished
Medical Professional in the medical field for his work as an Internist with
PACT Primary Care.
Dr. Fernando attended medical school at the University of
Ceylon in Sri Lanka and completed his internship at the General Hospital
Ceylon. He finished his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in
allergy and infectious disease at the Hospital of Saint Raphael when he
relocated to the United States.
Dr. Fernando has worked in the medical field for more than 50 years. He is
affiliated with PACT Primary Care in West Haven, CT and can also be found on
staff at Milford Hospital Yale-New Haven Hospital’s York Street campus and
Yale-New Haven Saint Raphael campus. He started his private practice 45 years
ago. While at Saint Raphael, the doctor
served as an emergency room attending physician member of the medical board,
president of medical staff and trustee before joining PACT Primary Care.
Dr. Fernando is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of
Internal Medicine (ABIM). According to Dr. Fernando, the ABIM is a
physician-led non-profit independent evaluation organization driven by doctors
who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing
world. He notes that internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with
the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing
in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and
complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall
well-being.
Dr. Fernando’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all doctors, and
now his daughter is also a doctor. He has never had any malpractice suits
against him. The doctor’s patients stay with him for years and years, only
leaving if they move out of the area. He
prides himself on always being honest with patients and never rushing them. He
knows how important it is to really listen to the patients. He currently has 16
physicians and 6 offices in Connecticut and one of his partners took over
management of the practice 15 years ago.
In his spare time, Dr. Fernando enjoys spending time with his eight
grandchildren and gardening.
