THOMAS VANAMAN - PROFESSOR

Lexington, KY - Prominently featured in The Inner Circle, Thomas Vanaman is acknowledged as a Pinnacle Professional Member Inner Circle of Excellence for his contributions to Biochemistry.

Thomas Vanaman has built a distinguished career in biochemistry spanning more than five decades, marked by groundbreaking research, academic leadership, and a lasting influence on the scientific community. From 1983 until his retirement in 2007, he served as chair and later professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical School.

During his tenure, Dr. Vanaman led a laboratory that advanced understanding of calmodulin, a multifunctional calcium binding protein expressed in all eukaryotic cells and essential to numerous biological processes. His research significantly expanded knowledge of calcium signaling and contributed broadly to the field of molecular biochemistry.

Following retirement, Dr. Vanaman remained active in scientific publishing as an associate editor for the Journal of Biological Chemistry, where he helped guide the development of the journal’s first fully electronic format. He has authored and coauthored numerous works appearing in Glycobiology, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, and other respected scientific publications, reflecting a long standing commitment to discovery and scholarship.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky, followed by a PhD in biochemistry from Duke University and postdoctoral training at Stanford University. Across his career, he also explored the structure and function of viral proteins and collaborated on research examining molecular mechanisms of epilepsy.

Dr. Vanaman credits his mentors, Robert L. Hill and George R. Stark, for shaping his scientific journey. He takes great pride in his family, including his children and grandchildren, whose pursuits reflect a shared commitment to excellence and creativity.

With a professional legacy defined by innovation and academic leadership, Dr. Vanaman’s work continues to influence future generations of scientists and contributes enduring value to the field of biochemistry.
